If you’re at one of those times when you know you could use some solid advice and extra wisdom, you might want to consider the Book of Proverbs.

Proverbs is chock-full of the kind of pithy, rock-solid, practical advice a person can build his entire life upon.  In fact, Proverbs is so rich and densely packed with life-enriching wisdom that you cannot possibly absorb all of the advice contained in one of its chapters in a single reading.

Realizing this, over the years countless numbers of people have taken advantage of the fact that it has 31 chapters, which coincides with the maximum number of days in any given month.   So they read it along with the monthly calendar!  It’s a simple way of remembering which chapter you’re on.  For example, today is February 24^th, so this morning, you’d read the 24^th chapter of Proverbs.

When you finish out the month, chances are you’ll want to go right back to Chapter 1 and do it again…and again.  If you get interrupted and can’t finish the chapter on a particular day, or if you forget to read or get too busy and skip a day, no problem.  You know you’ll have the chance to pick it up on that day next month.

During one stretch of my life, I read the “Proverb of the Day” for three straight years – which took me through the entire book about 36 times.  And here’s the thing:  Every time I returned, I discovered new insights I desperately needed to use that very day!

During our morning couple devotions, Judy and I have read the “Proverb of the Day” for more than a year at a time.

That’s just one of the many differences between the Bible and every other book ever written.  Because God breathed His Word into its authors, the Bible is inexhaustible.  The more you read it, the more you get out of it and the greater your understanding grows.

At various periods of my life, I’ve returned to the “Proverb of the Day” system for a month, three months or longer, when I was faced with a series of big decisions and especially felt the need to absorb all of the Godly wisdom, advice and counsel I could get.

It’s like having God Himself as your own personal Life Coach.  Through that day’s Proverb, He walks you through the day, revealing to you His timeless wisdom that still stands through the ages.  When you do this day after day, you find yourself moving into ever greater meaning, purpose, happiness, contentment and success.

Most of the Book of Proverbs was written by Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, until Jesus Christ.  If you’re curious, here’s the background on how Solomon’s wisdom came about.  He was very young and had just been made King of all Israel, during one of Israel’s greatest periods of world influence:

At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”

Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day. Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David.

“But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.

“Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both riches and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in my ways and obey my statutes and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.” (1 Kings 3:5-14)
