Lazaroo – Monday, June 18, 2012

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with total transparency:

“Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.”
(Acts 1:26)

So, Jesus…

it came down to two men –

Justus and Matthias.

They cast lots – like what we might do in flipping a coin or rolling the dice –

and the lot fell to Matthias
the “chosen” one.

I can’t help wondering what it felt like to be Justus

the one not chosen.

Well, actually…I don’t have to wonder.

I know exactly how that feels.

There have been countless times in my life when people preferred someone else.

Sometimes I could guess why.

But a ton of times it felt like nothing more than

mere chance

“them’s the breaks”

tough luck.

Until I realize there’s no such thing as “luck.”

When I’m not chosen, You’re sparing me
from something I’m not smart enough to understand –

I don’t want.

Interesting juxtaposition between yesterday’s and today’s Lazaroo. I have never been able to shake free from the thought that the eleven made the same mistake as Moses with their choosing between Justus and Matthias, especially in light of the later selection of Saul by God Himself. Their selection process lacked the opportunity for God to say, “Neither, just wait.”

It seems that even God’s elect are capable of running off in their own whimsical direction under their own imagined power, a realization that is not very comforting or helpful to the rank-and-file.
