Lazaroo – Saturday, October 3, 2009

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with a broken heart:

“How the mighty have fallen!”
(2 Samuel 1:19)

I’ve seen it happen, Jesus.

Men and women – great leaders –

intelligent
strong
gifted
wise

suddenly fall on their faces in shocking disgrace.

It’s happened so often that it terrifies me. I can’t help but wonder

who will be next?

Which of the

pastors
authors
singers
leaders
teachers
public servants

people in positions of high authority

I trust to lead me
that I now look up to
who inspire me to do my best

will, in the next moment

utterly betray my trust?
prove to be two-faced?
reveal the ugly façade of a double life?

I have no control over the flaws, weaknesses or outright hypocrisy of others, LORD.

There’s no way I can predict which of my heroes have feet of clay.

I have but one defense:

From this moment forward

I will focus my eyes on You.

The best I can tell, we all have feet of clay. That’s why I tend to gravitate toward those who are open about their faults and weaknesses and to run like crazy away from those who pretend to have it all under control. From my 50+ years of observation, one of the surest signs of an immanent fall is a rigid posture.
