Lazaroo – Thursday, July 16, 2009

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with excuseless humility:
“Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commandments and regulations blamelessly.”
(Luke 1:6)
Wow, Jesus.
It’s actually possible for two people
to be upright
to observe all Your commandments
to observe all Your regulations
blamelessly.
And not just in their own eyes – justifying and excusing their actions as most of us tend to do –
but in Your sight.
Obviously, Zechariah and Elizabeth were good people.
But for all that, they were still just people.
Ordinary human beings.
Susceptible to the same temptations I am.
People who had blown it countless times in the past.
But people who had finally decided they didn’t want to live like that anymore.
So they didn’t.
If – with Your help – they were able to drive that stake in the dirt before Your death, burial and resurrection…
Surely on this side of the cross…
So can I.

“Upright in the sight of God” is an interesting phrase. Those who are born again are upright in the sight of God. Abraham (way before Christ walked the Earth) made a lot of mistakes before and after God’s promise to him, yet Abraham believed God. Because of that, God deemed Abraham as “upright” in His sight.
Gen 15:6 “And he believed in the LORD; and He counted it to him for righteousness.”
Belief, faith and mercy go a long way in us being considered by God as “upright”. Still the faithful heart, will strive for obedience.
