Lazaroo – Sunday, September 6, 2009

Sep 06, 2009 I Lazaroo.

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, in stunned awareness:

“See, I will make you small among the nations.”
(Obadiah 1:2)

If You were willing to do this to the nation of Israel

the people You chose above all others

You will do this to my country, too –

if we make the same mistakes Your people made.

And that is exactly what we are doing.

O Jesus!

What is wrong with us?

Why do we persist in our sin?

Why do we ignore Your repeated warnings?

What makes us think we will be the first to escape the judgment that falls on every nation that turns its back on You?

It’s Your patience, isn’t it?

You are

so kind
so loving
so reluctant to do to us as we deserve

that we conclude You

don’t see
don’t care
don’t exist.

But You do…

as we –

God help us! –

are about to find out.

Jeff – I love your heart, man! You are right on. Our allegiance is not to a party. It’s to God. Which means we must evaluate each issue on its Biblical principles. Don’t ever apologize for the length of your response. Lazaroo is all about passion for God – and you’ve got a ton of it.

My apologies for the length of my response. I will try to ensure that it will not happen again.

I didn’t want to address this . . . not here . . . not now. However, it isn’t about me and my wants but the conviction that is pressing on my heart as I pound this out on my keyboard. If you read this and dismiss it immediately, then the message is obviously not for you for whatever reason. However, even if you have a hard time with it, there may be SOMETHING in it for you, for I believe that the conviction I feel as it leaves my fingertips is not from my own mind but from God in which I endeavor to serve.

I wonder how many of us that read this Lazaroo in our comfortable Christian subculture had the reaction to it that we must somehow defeat the evil Democrats and turn this country around for God. I hope not many.

It is quite easy and quite lazy to think that one political party has all the answers when comes to issues that God cares about. However, God seldom gives us the “easy way”, does He? I believe it hurts God to see His people give allegiance to a party when that kind of loyalty is reserved only for Him.

Today’s political climate adds to the confusion. Is capitalism God’s gift to humanity? Does it even trump caring for the poor and the infirmed? What does the Bible say about these issues?

I am not trying to sway anyone in their political views. This is not a plea to support a specific kind of health care reform. I am just using this as an example because it is front and center right now. I just want to urge anyone with an open mind and heart for God to address our country’s choices on an issue by issue basis and not by party line ideology.

Yes, God hates abortion and He wants us to seek Him and have fellowship with Him – even in public schools. However, God cares about the poor and stresses caring for the “least of these”. We should never be content with the state of “these” until they are all cared for. I do not want us to face God as individuals OR as a country and be asked if we could have done more.

I want to encourage everyone to seek Godly conviction for each issue this country faces.

It is understood that it is more dangerous for a person to THINK he is a Christian and not really be committed, than it is for someone to rebel at the notion. The former is harder to sway because he thinks he is already there and therefore complacent in regards to the message. The latter knows where he stands so he pays attention (and seeds can be planted). I believe it is the same with our country. Don’t be complacent because you believe you are following “God’s party”. Instead, KNOW that you are following God’s heart.

Lord give us the conviction for the issues that our country is facing and the courage to stand for those convictions – even when our brothers and sisters disapprove.
