Lazaroo – Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Jun 02, 2010 I Lazaroo.

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, in holy fear:

“I will cut off from this place… those who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry host…”
(Zephaniah 1:4-5)

It’s so easy to do that, Jesus –

to worship Your creation
instead of their Creator

to become so engrossed in Your blessings
that I forget the One who gave me these gifts.

How different am I – really –

from those people who went up to their roofs
to bow down and worship the planets and stars?

I don’t recognize what I’m doing, because, of course,

I don’t call what I do,

I call it my

What harm is there in that?

They’re all gifts of love from You

meant to be enjoyed
to make my life sweeter
to contribute to the lives of others

except when I cross the line into “worship”

and allow them to

my focus on You.

Wow, Sam. Powerful stuff. Thank you for challenging yourself…and us.

I went back and read the entire chapter of Zephaniah, and frankly, it scared the socks off me! It seems to say that the day is coming when all those who reject the Lord, who turn away from His teachings, commands and His love, will taste the bitter fruits of their ‘plantings’. Got money? He doesn’t care. Have lots of ‘stuff’? Oh, well, it means nothing in the greater scheme of things, for it will all be taken away, and those who ‘worship’ things, whether it’s stuff, money, sex, ‘fun’, whatever, will find themselves ripped bare, until they are utterly exposed, and God smacks them down with what we REFUSED to see.

This makes me want to examine my life, see if I’m guilty of ‘worshipping’ something other than what I should, whether it’s tangible ‘stuff’, or intangible, like a relationship that hinders my walk with God, a mentality that keeps me from fully experiencing the love and teachings that God keeps trying to get through to me. I hope I’m smart enough, discerning enough, and strong enough to learn the lessons He’s trying to teach me.
