Lazaroo – Wednesday, May 30, 2012

May 30, 2012 I Lazaroo.

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with newfound respect:

“They trample on the heads of the poor as upon the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed.”
(Amos 2:7)

Not a good plan, Jesus!

People who take advantage of the poor are saying:

“God doesn’t exist.”

Oh, maybe that’s not their intention –

but if they believe in god
the god they have in mind

isn’t You.

To disrespect the poor

is to show contempt for their Maker:

You.

You fiercely defend the poor

You promise to crush those who crush them
You pledge to bless those who help them

You call “wicked” anyone who denies them justice.

You promise a long rein to the leader who treats them fairly

(which may explain some of the election outcomes
I’ve puzzled over in the past).

If I’m generous to the poor

You’ll be generous with me.

If I ignore the cry of the poor…

You’ll ignore me.

Ironically, this is exactly what the US is arguing right now in the presidential campaigns. As an independent, the economic policies and the values of the right (Republicans) really bother me – just as some of the social values of the left bother me (e.g. abortion). This lazaroo reminds me that neither party has all the right answers and that my political decisions should be made on a case by case basis.
