“‘Meaningless! Meaningless!’ says the Teacher. ‘Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.’”
(Ecclesiastes 1:2)

What do I do with a stream of words like these, Jesus?  They’re so pessimistic, so defeatist, so devoid of hope.

Or are they?

The man who uttered them was pretty smart.  You made him the wisest man who ever lived, second only to You.

On top of that, You loaded Him up with more possessions, more wealth, more fame, more power, more success, more of the pleasures human beings crave – both legitimate and illegitimate – than anyone else on this earth will ever know.

And it left him empty.

That pretty much tells me all I need to know about the wisdom of selling my soul to acquire, achieve or experience any of the stuff Satan keeps dangling in front of my nose.

It absolutely can be gone in the blink of an eye, John. This current economic crisis is giving us all a long, hard look at that reality.
