Lazaroo – Thursday, February 2, 2012

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with fresh awareness:

“Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”
(Acts 1:21-22)

Everybody knew the Twelve Apostles, Jesus.

Your starting team.

You chose them – You!

No better judge of character ever walked this planet.

But then the unthinkable happened.

The one they may have trusted the most

their treasurer!

turned out to be Your betrayer.

When Judas hung himself
suddenly, there was an opening in the Twelve.

For the first time, they had to take a second look
at the people who had been around them all along.

Maybe I need to do the same.  I’ve got “openings” in my life!

Who…have I been overlooking?

I may be misinterpreting this Bible passage, but I’ve always felt that the “eleven” pretty much missed the whole target in making this important decision (no big surprise since they jumped ahead of Jesus’ clear instructions to simply WAIT until they had “received power from on high”). They wound up choosing someone whose name is never mentioned again while God chose an “outlier” named Saul who went from persecuting the Church to writing most of the New Testament, but never was accepted into the inner circle in the church at Jerusalem. I guess that’s why I’m always looking at those out on the fringes – and sometimes beyond.
