Lazaroo – Thursday, March 5, 2009

“The LORD called to Moses and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting.” (Leviticus 1:1)

I would love to hear Your voice, Jesus!

At least, I think I would.

When You spoke aloud to the whole nation of Your people long ago, Your voice so terrified them they begged You never to speak to them again.

Is that how I would react?

You know me. You know what I can – and can’t – handle. If it would be good for me to hear Your voice, then please, please speak to me…if only in a whisper!

But even as I dare to make that request, this thought pierces my heart:

Why on earth would You trust me with the sound of Your voice when I still don’t obey the commands You’ve written out for me in black and white?

It’s so much easier to rationalize not obeying a commandment that’s written in black and white than it is to ignore a direct, spoken request. So often we tend to justify our behavior by ‘interpreting’ a commandment in a way that will make our sinful behavior more acceptable–or by simply ignoring the commandment altogether. However, were God to audibly speak his will to us, it would be far greater to ignore. There is such power in the spoken word under normal circumstances–imagine how terrifyingly awesome it would be to hear GOD’S words uttered in his tongue!
