Lazaroo – Friday, May 1, 2009

“How long, O LORD, must I call for help, but you do not listen?”
(Habakkuk 1:2)

This prophet is approaching You with a boldness that shocks me.

Who am I to talk to You like this?

My sins utterly disqualify me from demanding anything of You.  Besides, in countless ways You have treated me infinitely better than I deserve.

But I can’t hide my feelings from You.  You know how hurt and confused I am when I repeatedly cry out to You and get no answer..

Or maybe You did answer and told me, “No.”

Or, “Wait.”

But – God forgive me for talking like this –

Sometimes it feels like I’m only making excuses for You.

Forgive me for my lack of faith.

Fill me with such an outrageous confidence in Your power to act that I dare to cry out with Your prophet:

O Jesus!  How long must I call for help, but You do not listen!

I am also thinking that if questioning God is on our hearts, we might as well and go on and cry out to him (insolent, or not). As Ken said, God knows our hearts. To follow some churchy script instead would be disengenuous. I think God would rather have our bold, but true insolence, than vain repetitions.
