Lazaroo – Thursday, December 29, 2011

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with pure devotion:

“How beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes are doves.”
(Song of Songs 1:15)

I’m a little puzzled, Jesus.

I understand Solomon was head-over-heels in love with his wife.
I know he’s using poetic language to help him express his feelings.

But calling her eyes “doves” is…

unexpected.

He could have said her eyes were

deep pools
sparkling black diamonds
mysterious worlds
twinkling stars
windows into her soul.

But doves?

Wrong shape for eyes.
Probably the wrong color, too.

Still, when Solomon told his wife that her eyes were doves
he had in mind something profoundly complimentary.

Of all the times You talk about doves in the Bible
you mention just two of their traits:

trust
innocence.

If that’s what he saw when he looked into her eyes
she was beautiful indeed.

O God.

That’s what I want You to see

when You look into mine.

I’ve struggled to understand some of the imagery in this love poem, too, Steve. Thanks for the insight.
