Lazaroo – Thursday, October 1, 2009

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with grateful relief:

“In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD.”
(1 Samuel 1:10)

You tell me to get rid of all bitterness, Jesus.

But not by stuffing it
not by denying how I feel
not by pretending it doesn’t exist

but by being real
by pouring out my soul to You

by telling You exactly how I feel
by giving it all over to You to do what I cannot

and trusting You to fix the unfixable.

Sometimes I just need to

scream out in pain
throw myself at Your feet
beat my fists against Your chest

and finally collapse, exhausted, in Your arms

secure in Your promise that I can come to You just as I am, confessing my

fear
fury
doubt
shock
hatred
dismay
bitterness

and find not the judgment I deserve

but the mercy I so desperately need.

Thank you, Steve, Bitterness has been the “other” unpardonable sin in evangelical circles for decades. But no one has, until now, even tried to offer hope for us urchins who sometimes feel its poison in our veins. Could there be a better application of the universal cure of giving it to God?
