Lazaroo – Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with unexpected wonder:
“I am a rose of Sharon…”
(Song of Songs 2:1)
When Solomon’s wife called herself a “ rose of Sharon”
that was a sharply evocative image for him, Jesus.
Not so much now.
We’re pretty sure we know what a rose is –
but few people in the world have any concept
of the land of Sharon –
that beautiful, fertile plain stretching between the mountains
and Mediterranean shore.
As far as most of us are concerned
the “rose of Sharon”
is a red flower belonging to a girl by that name.
Perhaps only a handful of us picture the delicately fragrant
white sea daffodil
that rises up from Sharon’s rich, well-watered loam.
Your Word contains so many surprises
holds so much in store for me
corrects so many of my false impressions
if only I will devote myself
to plant my heart deep
in the rich loam of Your truth.
