Lazaroo – Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, in sheepish awareness:
“Oh, how charming!”
(Song of Songs 1:16)
I have to admit, Jesus…
when I hear that someone is “charming”
I want to gag.
Especially when I suspect the implication is this other person is charming
and I’m not.
It makes me feel like – against my will – I’ve been entered as a contestant in a game I can’t win.
“Fine!”
I think to myself.
“Let them be charming.
I refuse to play that shallow game.
“I’d rather be a person of substance.
“If people like me, fine.
If they don’t, that’s their loss.”
There’s a measure of integrity in that approach
and perhaps a tiny dab of defensiveness. 😉
I suppose I have to admit something else:
If someone accused me of being charming
I wouldn’t be offended.
So maybe the truth is, I should want to be charming –
not so much to draw people to myself…
but to You.
