Lazaroo – Thursday, August 18, 2011

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with pure devotion:
“My lover is to me a cluster of henna blossoms from the vineyards of En Gedi.”
(Song of Songs 1:14)
You know, Jesus…
to get anything out of this verse –
it would be helpful to know that En Gedi is an oasis in Israel
brought to life at the edge of the desert by two spring-fed streams
that provide flowing water year-round.
Then I’d have to know a little something about henna –
that it was grown as a hedgerow around these lush vineyards
was used to hold the soil against wind erosion
that its dense, thorny branches kept hungry animals out
preventing them from eating the grapes of the vineyard
that its flowers produced a pleasing fragrance.
Only then would I be able to understand:
This woman is saying her lover defends, shelters, protects her –
and smells good, to boot!
all of which You are to me.
