When I hear flattering words
I’m immediately on my guard.

In the past, I’ve been fooled

suffering deeply as a result.

Please help me discern when loving, tender words are genuine

and when they’re meant to lull me into someone’s clutches

because what I cannot fully take in…can scarcely believe…

is that right now, You are saying these very words

to me.
