Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with excuseless humility:

“…my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; for their feet rush into sin…”
(Proverbs 1:15-16)

Who are these people in my life, Jesus –

those who suddenly show up out of my past
those Satan is preparing to send to me in my future
those he has strategically positioned in my life this very moment

whose smooth words
compelling ideas
enticing ways

mask the evil direction of their feet.

Even now, they bend over the starting blocks

crouch low
stretch their legs
go up on their toes

eager for the pop of Satan’s starting pistol
that will fling them at top speed
toward the finish line of sin.

O God!

Deliver me from the deceptive excitement of that race
from the frantic cheering of the leering crowd
and from the lure of a medal

of fool’s gold.
