Lazaroo – Wednesday, January 11, 2012

Beg God to send His life surging through you, as you pray aloud the words of this Lazaroo:

“The seeds are shriveled beneath the clods.”
(Joel 1:17)

That’s one stark image, Jesus –

clods of dirt, hard, dry, unyielding
I can almost smell their dust

packed on top of seeds, once green, bursting with life
now sapped, shrunken, wrinkled.

It’s not just seeds that end up like that, is it?

It’s people.

I’ve seen them – so dry, shriveled and lifeless that I can’t begin to imagine a time when they were bristling with life, hope, dreams.

Dirt clods can do that –
especially the ones hurled by other people.

Criticism, sarcasm, ridicule, jealousy, hatred, disbelief, contempt…

just dirt, really…

it’s not like they’re rocks
not like they have the power to kill

except…when enough dirt clods get dumped on me…

something inside nearly dies.

Moisten me, Father!
Send Your sweet, life-giving rain

so I can sprout roots
and send my fresh green shoots busting up

through the clods.
