“Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.”
(Joel 1:14)

Sometimes it comes to this, Jesus

when our burdens are overwhelming
when the destruction is massive
when the calamity bearing down on us is terrifying

when our enemies overpower us
when the mountain is too steep to climb

when the days are too hard
and the nights are too long

when business as usual is as pointless
as spitting into the wind

when our best efforts are as effective
as emptying the ocean with a spoon

when perfunctory prayers
distracted Bible reading
autopilot worship
halfhearted obedience
going-through-the-motions Christianity

just won’t cut it.

Then it’s time

to stop eating
call Your people to our houses of worship

and fall on our faces before You.
