Pity the person who dies

and leaves behind no children
to carry on Your work.

O Jesus.

This isn’t about ordinary children, is it? – 

whether I’m married or single
whether I’m young or old
whether or not I have biological sons and daughters.

When I step off this earth into eternity

I’ve got to leave behind at least one person
who will take the baton You’ve placed in my hand

and run with it

not for a block
not for a mile

for a lifetime –

in such a way
